Research Limitations, Strengths, and Weaknesses

Updated: Dec 11, 2021

For any research project there are limitations, strengths, and weaknesses. Of course our research also had these. One limitation that this study had was that it was not intended to be representative of the entire world, but more specifically for college students in the United States. Our sample size was relatively small (105) compared to the amount of students that actually go to UW-Eau Claire (9,803). All of the questions were self-report which is very reliant on participants to answer truthfully and correctly. While many different classes were invited to take part in the survey, the survey ended up being completed by a majority of people in human sciences. The results could have been very different if there was a more variety within majors.

Within the research project, there were weaknesses and strengths that should be mentioned. We put the survey onto SONA, which is a site that is available to any student taking a psychology course and has student and professor research surveys available to take, and some professors even offer extra credit for completion of a certain amount of surveys. Another strength we had is having a good covering of different disciplines. By having the survey available to psychology 100 students, there was a good display of disciplines. Psychology 100 is offered for any major as a general course, and most students take this course. For the weaknesses, one of the first ones we had was the number of questions. We ended up having 19 questions, which could very much stop people from completing the survey. SONA also could be a weakness because not everyone knows about the website, specifically only psychology students. We also had about 7 questions on the survey that asked participants about their mental health on a Likert scale, but did not end up using any of that data in the final results.

Finally, another thing that needs to be mentioned is the fact that the survey was done during COVID-19. This research study was conducted during 2020-2021. During these years we must acknowledge that there was a pandemic occurring, which could affect the data. The pandemic could have potentially changed people's mental health, which would have completely affected the data.
